Teething/Tooth Development

baby_teeth_copyA baby’s teeth start to develop inside the womb, but generally speaking the first tooth usually appears at 6 months. It is normally one of the central lower incisors, and is soon followed by the other central incisors, lower and then upper. Next come the lateral incisors, appearing between 10 and 16 months. The canines are next at 16 to 20 months. Finally, come the second molars at between the ages of two and three, which makes up the full complement of baby teeth. There are 20 baby teeth in total, compared to adults’ 32.

These baby teeth remain until the child is 6 or 7 years old, when they start to be displaced by adult teeth.

Teething Problems

While some babies develop all of their teeth with seemingly little discomfort, others suffer terribly. A number of telltale signs indicate that a baby is teething:

·         Baby appears flushed

·         May have an increased temperature

·         Gums are red and swollen

·         An inflamed cheek

·         Baby dribbles and drools

·         Baby grabs and chews anything

·         May be more clingy and whiny

·         May have trouble sleeping

·         Stools change, some babies have diarrhoea and others produce hard little, round balls

Liquid paracetamol may be used for pain relief, or products like Teejel and Prodol. Homeopathic teething powders are also recommended by some, and they help with babies’ tummy upsets too.

Chewing on a cool teething ring – never frozen – or firm textured foods such as carrot fingers, rusks, pieces of apple or biltong can ease the pain.

Many babies appreciate mom’s finger firmly been rubbed up the gum; the counter pressure brings relief.

Never dab any alcohol on the sore gum; it can be extremely harmful to the infant.
