Discipline Matters

April 05, 2010 0 Comments Latest Updates by Janine Daniel

baby-disciplineWe spent time together over the next months either at our cottage or in Johannesburg. Whenever I saw Chloe, I noticed how she was developing. She was saying words and expressing her feelings by smiling or her displeasure by screaming. She likes to get her own way and sometimes needs to be disciplined. This is where Janine and I differ. I saw  the following Tailpiece in our local newspaper and felt that it was very appropriate: " Grandparents are  the people who think your children are wonderful even though they're sure you're not raising them right."

Happy, Sunny Days

December 28, 2009 0 Comments Latest Updates by Janine Daniel

chloe_sunnydaysChloe did not go down to the lagoon as it was terribly hot, so Vic put our inflatable dinghy in the shady part of the garden, filled it  with tepid water and put Chloe's toys in it. Chloe spent a few happy hours splashing and throwing the toys out. I had bought her a cute yellow bikini and she wore it with flare. The following day our neighbour's grandson, Matthew came to play. He is a few months older than Chloe. He jumped into the boat and started playing and splashing. Chloe had woken from her nap and we took her outside. The look of horror on her face at seeing a strange person playing with her toys and in her boat was so comical. However once we put her in, she was her normal happy self and copied everything that Matthew did.

Bumps & Bruises

Chloe has a very happy disposition. One evening, when Logan and Janine were visiting us at Glen Eden, I volunteered to look after Chloe while they went out for supper. Chloe was fast asleep and rolled off the bed. Horrors of horrors! I picked her up and comforted her with cuddles and kisses. She stopped crying and gave me the most beautiful smile. Another memory is stored.

Memory Marvel

December 21, 2009 0 Comments Latest Updates by Janine Daniel

Janine and family arrived after Christmas and it was great to see them again. I was amazed at Chloe's memory. She remembered all the pitfalls in our cottage - steep steps, how to close the toilet door without catching her fingers, and where her toy cupboard was. She was so happy to be with me and Vic. Her hands went into fists and she held them tight and pulled such a face! How we chuckled. She still does that every time we meet.

May I have this dance?

September 25, 2009 0 Comments Latest Updates by Janine Daniel

Keegan is a delightful eight year old boy who often comes to visit with his mom. He loves Chloe and they play well together. One afternoon Chloe was dancing to music and entertaining the family when Keegan arrived. He went up to her and said, "May I have this dance Chloe?' He put his arms around her and off they went dancing around the table. Chloe was nearly walking at this stage, so she was still unsteady on her feet but that did not stop them. Keegan was in control and Chloe hung in there!

Up, Up and Away!

September 19, 2009 0 Comments Latest Updates by Janine Daniel

Chloe_upandawayWhen Chloe celebrated her 1st birthday (at the Joburg Zoo), she was given two lovely hats. Janine tried to put one of them on Chloe's head for a photo to be taken. Chloe was not having any of it and pulled it off. She did the same with the second hat. To this day, she does not like hats! Chloe had a lovely cake and it was a wonderful idea to go to the zoo. Janine had bought Chloe a big bright helium balloon with a ONE on it. I took it out the car and tied it to Chloe's pram. When we arrived at the entrance of the zoo, I must have brushed against the balloon. It went straight up to the thatch roof and stayed there. I felt awful. I asked the attendant if there was anyone there that could retrieve it but to no avail. When we left a couple of hours later, it was still attached to the roof. I made up for the loss of the balloon on Chloe's 2nd birthday. That one did not escape!

Warm Cuddles

baby-blanketOne day I took Chloe into the pool. When she wanted to get out, I wrapped her in a towel and we sat in the lounge and she cuddled into me and lay quiet still for a few moments. Gran and Chloe enjoying being together! What bliss!

Clamber Club Homework?

August 23, 2009 0 Comments Latest Updates by Janine Daniel

child-blanketJanine started taking Chloe to "Clamber Club" on a Friday morning and what a good idea that was. The children are taught all sorts of exciting things. I was staying over for a weekend and Logan got out a blanket. Chloe gave a whoop of delight and sat in the middle of the blanket. Logan had to pull her around the house. She loved it. Apparently this exercise helps with balance, movement awareness and body orientation.

A dear friend

chloe_youngGA dear friend phoned to tell me that her daughter was pregnant. I was so excited and gave out whoops of delight. However the line at the other end remained surprisingly silent. I heard an intake of breath then a quavering voice said, ‘No, no, you don’t understand, I am devastated; I am too young to be a granny!!!’

I was gobsmacked for a second and then my laughter bubbled out.

Chloe's Christening

November 10, 2008 0 Comments Latest Updates by Carmen

Chloe_christeningI flew up for the Christening in November. It was lovely. The ceremony took place in Logan’s dad’s beautiful garden. The weather was perfect. Chloe wore white pantaloons and a matching white top. Logan’s mom had made a lovely green and white garland for her head. Cute personified! Their minister gave a memorable sermon and Chloe was an angel.  I wished my hubby had come with me but he is a real homebody.

Hooray for the New Year holidays. Janine, Logan, Chloe, Vic and I went down to Morgan’s Bay for a few relaxing days and then on to Kei Mouth. What a great time we had. Chloe behaved perfectly and spent many a day under an umbrella with gran while the others swam. One morning the wind was particularly gusty. Logan and I tried to put the umbrella up but it kept blowing in all directions. It was hilarious. Needless to say, we did not stay at the beach that day.

First visit to the paediatrician

September 25, 2008 0 Comments Latest Updates by Carmen

Chloe_peadLater that morning we took Chloe to the paediatrician. Chloe was given a clean bill of health and the doctor explained what should be done if Chloe ever stopped breathing again. It sounded so rational and simple but when in that situation, fear takes over!

I was sitting in the garden, going over what had happened the previous night, when I saw the funny side of it all. I remember one of the staff asking me if Janine was a first-time mom. I nodded. She nodded back and said that first-time moms can be recognised by their behaviour. At that particular time Chloe was being X-rayed and had done a pooh in her nappy. Janine saw the mess and shouted out that Chloe was bleeding! The nurse assured her that it was a pooh! Not funny then, but . . .

Chloe was Born!

September 19, 2008 0 Comments Latest Updates by Carmen

chloe_bornChloe Sian was born at 10.30 on 19 September 2009, weighing 3.2 kg and 52 cm in length (tall like me!). Logan phoned to tell me and assured me that Janine and baby were both doing well. Janine had to have a Caesar as Chloe was breech and her legs were straight. I was disappointed as I wanted Janine to have a natural birth. The staff at school were very supportive and a photo of Chloe was send to a colleague’s phone so that everyone could see the beautiful baby. I confided in a friend and said that we would see the baby before Janine would.

Well, that was a faux pax if ever there was one. She told me that Janine would have been awake throughout the procedure! Three cheers for progress! In my day a Caesar was very rare and the mom-to-be would have had an anaesthetic. I phoned my better half and the rest of the family. We were all very excited and I could not wait to see to see my brand new granddaughter and my daughter as a brand new mom. My flight had been booked for the 24th (Chloe’s due date was 23rd).

The Call

February 01, 2008 0 Comments Latest Updates by Carmen

chloe_callOn 1 February 2008, I received a call from my daughter. She said that she had just peed on a stick and that it had turned blue. It took two or three seconds for the penny to drop.

I could feel the very essence of me being filled with unbelievable joy, love and excitement. I asked so many questions while trying to shout to Vic, my better half, to come to the phone. He duly arrived and said that he had gathered (from all the noise and my voice) that Janine had fallen pregnant and we were delighted!
