January 2015 Editors Letter

Dear Reader,

Happy New Year 2015Happy New Year!

It is natural to feel some anticipation mixed with excitement when expecting another child. Your first-born has been the center of your family since birth and possibly perceives him or her as the center of the universe. How will he or she respond to the arrival of another baby and the difference in family dynamics?

If you prepare your child and help them understand their place in the family, the transition is likely to be smoother. How your child responds is partially dependent on their temperament. Children who are flexible and self-contained may adjust more easily. While those who are highly sensitive, may require more time in making the adjustment.

Some women develop Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the year after pregnancy, and symptoms can increase after a baby is born. These facts lead researchers to believe that gender might play a role in the development and progression of RA. Many are trying to understand the effects female hormones might have in the development of RA. Currently, there are limited answers to these questions.

Tum2Mom loves hearing about birth experiences. We have never heard the same story twice. If you would like to share your story (or have any questions you would like to ask) the Tum2Mom community, feel free to post them on our Facebook page.

Editors Letter December 2014

christmas babyDear Reader,

Christmas is just around the corner. The advent calendar has been bought, a little door is opened each day and excitement mounts. I enjoy Christmas so much more now that I can see the wonder on my daughter’s face. Her excitement is contagious.

We have had a rather wet and mild summer but if you are pregnant and feeling the heat, this article is just for you.

Strap in the Future is a campaign that is very close to our hearts and that is why we are tremendously excited to announce that the Department of Transport has published amendments to the National Road Traffic Regulations 2000 under the National Road Traffic Act, 1996. "There is also a requirement that will require that children that are being transported in a motor vehicle to be buckled up with appropriate child restraints," says department spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso. "This requirement applies to children [who] cannot fit on the current seat belts that are fitted in motor vehicles." This law is going to come into effect in April 2015 and it is applicable to taxis, too.

Our Medical A-Z article is all about Tay-Sachs. It is a rare progressive genetic disorder affecting neurons (nerve cells) in the brain and spinal cord.

Tum2Mom wishes everyone a wonderful festive season. Keep calm and most of all, enjoy it.
